Adventure Learning Centre Update and Working Bees

Reporter: Brodie

A huge thank you to everyone for last weekend, both the workers and the people who brought food and baking.

We are having working bees over the next two weekends: This Saturday 5 December, we will be finishing the retaining wall and starting the installation of the pea gravel fill from 8:30am to approximately 1:30pm.

The following Saturday 12 December and Sunday 13 December, we will finish the pea gravel installation and install the ropes, hanging tyres etc which will take most of Saturday and a half day on Sunday.

My contact details again as per previous message (cahillp100@gmail.com)

Please bring a shovel and wheelbarrow and safety boots. We will need to keep all cars parked on the Leeston side of the car park and well away from the gates to the playground because there will be large trucks coming through there most of the morning.

Actually, we would appreciate the cricket group parking off the school grounds, eg over at the hall, because of the large truck movements.

Springston Enviro School Care Code

These are the 'Care Code' rules Springston Learners have agreed to follow.

After gathering your ideas, Holly and Ursula wrote the song. The boys then helped make the movie. It is our job to learn the song and use it every day.

Lets 'Help the Earth' and make our school an 'awesome place'.

Disclaimer: No animals or children were harmed in the making of this movie!

Thanks to Carol for all her expert support in this ECO Action.

Springston School RoboCup participation

Two teams from Springston School took part in this year's Christchurch RoboCup Junior Rescue event, held for a full day on Sunday 16 August at CPIT.

Both teams had appreciated the benefit of mentoring and extra practice opportunities through Lincoln University over recent months, and enjoyed their four rounds of competition. They represented Springston School with their best A+ characteristics and worked hard throughout the day to improve their programming. They certainly reflected the Mission statement for the RoboCup competition:

It is not whether you win or lose, but how much you learn that counts.

Here are a couple of videos from two of their rounds. Sorry boys, Carol mucked up the videoing of your last round - your best one - so it isn't able to be presented below.

Urgent - Text alerts from Springston School - Vodaphone issue

We've just become aware that those of you on Vodaphone will not have been receiving our text alerts since March. Vodaphone switched off our ability to send Vodaphone customers text alerts through our Facebook and Twitter system - they did this without notifying anyone - it's a worldwide issue with Vodaphone. Messages are still being received by Spark and 2 Degrees customers.

This leaves us with a dilemma. Some of you will see our emergency and urgent messages via Facebook, others will still receive texts. Vodaphone customers will now miss out.

Important messages for school closures, buses not running etc, will continue to be posted on our School News Blog and probably class blogs. These are all accessible from our website: www.springston.school.nz but of course, only work when you have electricity or internet access. We will also continue to send out texts for now.

We will do our best to keep you posted, one way or another until we decide on an alternative method!

These two messages were sent out by text earlier today:

Second hand clothing sale cancelled today.

Watching weather forecast, keep an eye out for text alerts (and reports on our news blog).

'We Connect' Presentation for parents

This morning Carol had the pleasure of sharing with a small group of parents the many ways our School endeavours to connect and communicate with our School Community. Links to some valuable research resources for students were also shared.

Below is a copy of the presentation for you to view at your leisure, for those of you keen to find out what was shared. We hope you find this useful. It will also be linked from the page above, labelled 'Presentations for Parents'.

Springston School Fun Run

On Friday 22 May we had the school Fun Run down at the local pony club. It was great day with lots of sunshine and the pony club was impressive with some exciting jumps and a small hill.

The competitors were dressed ready to go, fairy outfits were a trend this year. The crowd was large and let out great roars of encouragement as the runners went past.

The Sonic Team went first. They and had two laps around the pony club to do. They were followed by the Sprint Team who absolutely sprinted around the course twice. Step and Stride Teams were next with one lap and some went even faster than their buddies.

A big thank to the Pony Club for allowing us to use the facilities and to all the parents for their support.

ANZAC remembrance at Springston School

On Friday 24 April Springston School had a very special celebration to mark Anzac Day. On this day we had a visitor from our local community - Mr Norton who came to help us with our Anzac Assembly.

Groups of students had been busy during the week putting together our field of remembrance and this also where our kapa haka performed Tiro Tiro and Hareruia. We also laid a wreath to the fallen soldiers.

Art in the Garden

Thanks to the families who came to help us celebrate the new art in the Secret Garden during Friday's Picnic Day with the cutting of the ribbon. The garden is looking amazing due to the students who go down at lunchtimes on Monday, Wednesday and Friday along with the endless support of Zanada.

Most of the art works have been installed but there are still the Canterbury Plains painting and the Wind Fence that need to find permanent homes, so keep watching this space.
We also need to thank Lisa Amua for her expertise in Māori art and the Lewis Family's generous donation that was used to cover the costs of creating the art works.

Remember that you are welcome to visit the garden anytime and that 20 minutes of work in the garden is rewarded with being able to take two lots of veges home for tea.

Welcome to 2015 - reminders to start the year

Welcome back to the new school year. We hope you are all well, rested and have had a safe and happy time with friends and family.

A few reminders for you to start the year:
  1. The school office opens on Tuesday 3 February at 9 am.
  2. Learning Pathway Meetings are also on Tuesday. The information about this was included with reports at the end of last year. You have an allocated time to attend. Please remember to complete the goal-setting form before the meeting, and bring it along with you.
  3. Wednesday 4 February - we are looking forward to having all students back at school ready to start at 9 am sharp.
  4. Please remind your child to bring their sun hat on the first day, and they will also need their togs.
  5. For those parents involved with BYOD (Years 5-8), a reminder that there is a meeting from 5 - 6:30 pm on the Wednesday, in the Senior Classroom, to talk about any questions you may have, the licensing system that will be used for student devices, and to hear about how these tools will be utilised in class to support learning. There may be other sessions if necessary. Carol is generally available after school on a Wednesday or Thursday if you want to have a chat.
  6. It must be noted that BYOD devices are NOT to be brought to school during the first week, as they will not be required. Teachers will notify you when these are able to be brought, and some further information will be sent home for students to look at with their parents and sign, before the devices can come to school.

In the meantime, enjoy what's left of the holidays!

See you soon.

Springston School Principal
